Freedom Festival Has Fun for All Ages

CEDAR RAPIDS, IA (CBS2/FOX28) – Except for a quick shower here and there, the rain did not manage to dampen spirits. That meant that local residents of all ages got their Fourth of July celebration started off right.

"Hogwild days, fireworks and old cars, which is kind of an American icon really," said Duffy's Collectible Cars General Manager Jamie McLeod. "So it really doesn't get any better than that."

Today, the action started downtown with the Freedom Festival Parade. You might have seen people of all ages but don't be tricked. We all know who makes the decisions.

"Anything that has to do with the kids is usually one of our biggest things," said Cedar Rapids resident Kathy King-Hoffman.

The best part is no matter how old you are, the Freedom Festival brings out the kid in everyone.

"Anybody that knows me knows that I have a lot of that in me so that's probably why I enjoy this job so much," said the Executive Director of the Freedom Festival Robyn Rieckhoff.

The inner child is never too far away, even when the toys are much more expensive.

"It goes right back to being a kid in the candy store," said McLeod. "People love to look at old cars."

Especially ones that bring back memories. Harvey Nelson loved the 1959 Oldsmobile he owned when he got married.

"So when I found this one, I bought it and painted it the same color as the one I had," said Nelson.

Thanks partially to the Freedom Festival, while Nelson can share his car's history with the folks who come to see it, sometimes he's not the only one taking a walk down memory lane.

"It makes you feel good,” said Nelson. "Knowing that you've brought back a memory for someone who maybe had one of them back when they were a kid."
