WRST: Nothern named Cornell Assistant

Updated: Thursday, July 31 2014, 05:34 PM CDT
MOUNT VERNON, Iowa -- Nick Nothern, a three-time All-American and 2009 NCAA Division III finalist for the Rams, has been named assistant coach on Mike Duroe’s Cornell College wrestling staff.

Nothern, a 2010 Cornell graduate, returned to the Hilltop during the 2013-14 academic year as assistant director of admission. The Salina, Kan., native will begin his new duties on Aug. 11.

“I really wanted to get back into coaching and this is a great opportunity for me,” said Nothern, who stands sixth on the program’s modern-day list with 118 wins. “Coach Duroe and I have been in very close contact since I graduated. He’s been a mentor for me this whole time I’ve been away. I look forward to continue to learn from him.”

Nothern replaces Chad Beatty, who served two years as Cornell’s lead assistant. Beatty has accepted a coaching and teaching position at Forest Grove (Ore.) High School.

“Coach Beatty is a great coach and I have big shoes to fill,” said Nothern. “Wrestling is my passion. I feel lucky to be able to coach here at Cornell. This is exactly what I’ve been looking for.”

Nothern is one of seven wrestlers in Cornell’s storied history to earn all-America honors three times in a career. He was an NCAA runner-up at 133 pounds as a junior. Nothern placed sixth at nationals in 2008, and fifth in 2010.

Nothern fashioned a 33-4 record during his senior season. He was Iowa Conference runner-up in 2008 and 2010. Nothern helped guide the Rams to top-10 NCAA team finishes in 2008 (seventh) and 2009 (eighth).

“Nick is an amazing competitor,” said Duroe, entering his 10th season at the helm. “The two things that stand out are his passion for the sport and his tremendous work ethic. Both qualities will steer him well as a coach.

“Nick relates well with student-athletes and has a strong ability to recruit. We’re extremely excited for him to continue to develop his skills in our program. He’s a bright young coach.”

Nothern earned a bachelor’s degree in kinesiology from Cornell, and received his master’s in higher education from Iowa State University in 2012.

Nothern spent the 2012-13 year as admissions representative and volunteer assistant at Bethany (Lindsborg, Kan.) College, where he coached one All-American. He was a graduate assistant at Iowa Lakes Community College (2010-12), landing four All-Americans and one national champion during that span.

Nothern resides in Cedar Rapids with his wife Beth, a 2010 Cornell graduate.

The Rams return seven starters from last season’s 11-5 dual team that placed 16th at the NCAA Championships.
