NHL: Philadelphia Flyers Favor Friedman

Updated: Saturday, June 28 2014, 08:50 PM CDT
WATERLOO, Iowa -- The Black Hawks won 83 regular season games during Mark Friedman’s two years in Waterloo, and the defenseman’s regular contributions in that time led the Philadelphia Flyers to select him Saturday during the 2014 NHL Draft.

Philadelphia, the host franchise for this season’s draft, picked Friedman with the 26th selection in the third round and 86th overall, well ahead of his spot in the final Central Scouting rankings, 124th among North American skaters.

“We knew Mark needed to have a solid year for the Black Hawks to be successful last season, and he didn’t let us down,” said Head Coach P.K. O’Handley.  “When he was on the ice, we were a better team.”

After Waterloo tied a franchise record with 39 wins in 2012/13, Friedman was the highest scoring veteran who returned to Young Arena last fall.   In 2013/14, the Toronto native appeared in 51 games, and the Hawks hoisted the Anderson Cup for winning the United States Hockey League’s regular season championship.  Friedman notched ten goals and 30 assists, with the resulting 40 points ranking fourth in scoring among USHL defensemen last year.  He also posted a 22 plus/minus differential as Waterloo set a new mark for wins in one season: 44.  The Bowling Green recruit notched seven more assists in 12 games during the 2014 Clark Cup Playoffs, helping the Hawks to the championship series.

Friedman is the first Black Hawk to be drafted by the Flyers.  A pair of Waterloo defensemen - Mark Eaton and Andrew Alberts - have skated for Philadelphia in prior seasons.
