NHL: Montour Leads Draft Class

Updated: Saturday, June 28 2014, 08:50 PM CDT
WATERLOO, Iowa -- Just more than a year after the Waterloo Black Hawks acquired Brandon Montour in the 18th round of the United States Hockey League Draft, the  Anaheim Ducks selected him Saturday during the second round of the 2014 NHL Draft in Philadelphia.

Montour was recognized as both the USHL’s 2014 Player of the Year and Defenseman of the Year although Waterloo had picked him just 267th overall during Phase II of the 2013 USHL Draft.  His spectacular season with the Black Hawks led Anaheim to spend the 55th overall choice to claim his NHL rights.

“Brandon is truly a special player, and the Black Hawks organization is so proud of what he accomplished here last season, as well as the bright future ahead,” said Waterloo Head Coach P.K. O’Handley.  “Even more than his tremendous natural abilities and instincts, our coaching staff, Brandon’s teammates, and certainly Black Hawks fans appreciate the tremendous effort that was evident anytime he was on the ice.”

During the 2013/14 USHL season, Montour’s 62 points (14 goals, 48 assists) ranked ninth in the league.  No other defenseman finished among the USHL’s top 30 scorers.  His 16 points (six goals, ten assists) during the Clark Cup Playoffs led the league.  Helping the Black Hawks to the league’s regular season championship, the Anderson Cup, Montour led the Waterloo squad with a 35 plus/minus differential.  He was also one of only three Hawks to skate in all 60 regular season games and finished among the team’s top eight contributors of goals (eighth), assists (first), points (second), power play goals (tied for second with seven), and game-winning goals (tied for sixth with three).

In addition to being named Player and Defenseman of the Year, Montour was awarded a place on the 2013/14 All-USHL First Team.  The league also recognized him as the USHL Defenseman of the Week on six occasions throughout the season.

NHL Central Scouting slotted Montour 92nd among draft-eligible North American prospects in its final ranking released in April.  He is committed to the University of Massachusetts.

Former Black Hawks forward Jason Blake was a member of the Ducks from 2010 to 2012.  Defenseman Nick Pryor was drafted by the Ducks in 2008 while his USHL rights belonged to the Des Moines Buccaneers.  Waterloo acquired Pryor in a trade near the end of the 2008/09 season.
