MWL: Williams' Pinch Hit Propels Kernels

IOWA – A J.D. Williams pinch-hit, two-run single in the bottom of the eighth
inning led the Kernels to a 4-2 win over the Beloit Snappers on Tuesday

The Kernels
(22-23) broke a tie and took a 4-2 lead in the bottom of the eighth with a
pinch-hit, two-run single by Williams. Williams pulled his single down the
right-field line, plating both Bo Altobelli and B.K. Santy. The Kernels loaded
the bases with one out after Altobelli’s single, Santy’s double, and an
intentional walk to Ivory Thomas. Williams, in his only plate appearance of the
day, gave the Kernels their seventh win in their last at-bat on the season.

Steensel pitched a scoreless ninth inning for his second save in two

Alex Muren (1-1)
recorded the win after going two innings in relief. He allowed one run on two
hits while striking out three and walking none. Blake McMullen (0-1) took the
loss for Beloit as he allowed two runs on three hits in 1 2/3 innings in

starting pitching defined the ball game for the first six innings. Right-handed
starters Kohl Stewart for Cedar Rapids and Lou Trivino for Beloit surrendered
only four hits each through their six frames as both left with no-decisions.
Stewart allowed one run on four hits while striking out three and walking one.
Trivino allowed one run on four hits in his six innings. He struck out three
and walked three.

The Kernels
scored the first run of the game as Carlos Avila put the Kernels on the
scoreboard in the bottom of the second inning with a two-out RBI-single to left
field that brought Santy across the plate. The Snappers tied it up 1-1 in the
top of the fourth after BJ Boyd came across on throwing error on a fielder’s
choice off the bat of Tyler Marincov.

Beloit (19-25)
tallied a run in the top of the seventh inning, taking a 2-1 advantage.
Consecutive singles by Luis Baez and Sam Roberts put runners on the corners.
Then, a sacrifice bunt by Jose Chavez pushed Baez across for the go-ahead run.

The Kernels
quickly tied the game 2-2 in the bottom of the seventh inning. The Kernels
loaded the bases with nobody out after two singles and a hit batter. With two
outs, Chad Christensen grounded to the left side and reached on a Beloit
throwing error, allowing Thomas to score the tying run.

Brent Powers
went 0.1 inning exiting after fielding a comebacker to the mound. He allowed
one unearned run on two hits while striking out none and walking none.
