CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa -- The Cedar Rapids Kernels fell 6-2 in game one of a three-game series against the Quad-Cities River Bandits at Perfect Game Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium on Tuesday night. Chad Christensen and Michael Quesada came in to each score unearned runs during the contest while Bryan Haar collected his 23rd extra-base hit of the year on a double. Tanner Vavra also tallied two hits while Aaron Slegers suffered his third loss of the year. The Kernels committed two defensive errors on the night and are now 1-6 against the Bandits this year.

A wild first inning of play opened the game where three unearned runs came across the plate and both teams recorded a defensive error.

The River Bandits took an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first when Brett Phillips and Chan-Jong Moon scored. Moon raced all the way to third on a catching error at first base by Bo Altobelli that allowed Phillips to come across the plate. Moon was brought in by a Chase McDonald RBI-single.

Chad Christensen came around in the bottom of the first on a fielding error by Bandits’ third baseman Tyler White to cut the lead to 2-1.

Quad-Cities tallied two more runs in the top of the fourth inning on three straight two-out hits. Brett Booth tripled in White and Jon Kemmer to make it a 4-1 advantage.

Michael Quesada answered back by scoring on a wild pitch for the Kernels in the bottom of the fourth to make the deficit 4-2.

McDonald recorded his second run-batted-in for the Bandits in the fifth by driving in Phillips to extend the lead to 5-2.

Aaron Slegers (5-3) exited for Cedar Rapids after 4 1/3 innings of work on the mound. The Kernels starter surrendered five total runs, three being unearned, on six hits while striking out three and walking one during his 12th start of the year.

Josue Montanez entered in relief midway through the top of the fifth. The left-handed reliever allowed one unearned run over 2 2/3 innings of work on three hits while fanning six hitters.

Starting pitcher Jandel Gustave concluded his ninth start for the River Bandits after four innings. The right-hander allowed two runs, one earned, on five base-hits while striking out five and walking none.

Michael Feliz (2-1) began his outing in relief for the Bandits starting the fifth inning. Feliz struck out four batters and gave up two hits during four frames of scoreless pitching.

The Bandits added a run in the seventh to make the lead 6-2. Phillips scored on a Michael Quesada throwing error to third base after initially stealing the bag at third to come across for the Bandits final run of the game.

Chris Mazza toed the rubber to start the eighth frame for the Kernels. Mazza allowed one hit accompanied by two strikeouts during his two innings of scoreless work.

Right-handed closer Chris Cotton put down the Kernels in order in the ninth to secure the 6-2 victory in game one of the series.
