MWL: Kernels Dominate Dragons

Updated: Saturday, July 26 2014, 09:48 PM CDT
DAYTON,
Ohio – Chih-Wei Hu (3-0) dominated the Dayton Dragons on Saturday night in a
4-0 win in the opener of a series at Fifth Third Field. Hu struck out 10 and
allowed just two hits and one walk in six scoreless innings. The 10 strikeouts
set a new season-high for a Kernels pitcher in a single-game this season.

Hu
has made four starts in the Midwest League, and he has gone six innings in all
four. Over the past two starts, he has allowed zero earned runs and just four
hits in 12 innings.

The
Dragons (15-19, 51-51) were hitless until the fifth inning when Hu allowed a
double with one out. He struck out at least one batter in each of his six
innings, including three punch outs in the fifth inning. He struck out the
final two batters he faced in the sixth inning after allowing the second hit of
the night.

Jake
Reed and Nick Burdi were just as dominating as they combined to pitch the final
three innings. Reed struck out three over two perfect innings. Burdi went 1-2-3
in the ninth inning, striking out the final hitter of the game. All in all, the
Kernels struck out 14 Dragons on the night.

The
Kernels (19-15, 50-54) jumped in front 3-0 in the top of the first inning.
Engelb Vielma, Logan Wade, and Chad Christensen all singled to begin the game,
and they all came around to score runs. Vielma singled to left-center while
Wade chopped his single into right. Christensen’s RBI single was shot past a
diving shortstop into center and scored Vielma for the game’s first run. Wade
scored from third base on Mitch Garver’s RBI groundout while Christensen came
home on Bryan Haar’s RBI sacrifice fly to right, putting Cedar Rapids up early
by three.

Cedar
Rapids extended the lead to 4-0 in the fifth inning on Wade’s RBI sacrifice fly
to center that plated Michael Quesada. Quesada led off the inning with an
infield single and advanced to third on a double pulled to right field by J.D.
Williams.

Jackson
Stephens (2-3) took the loss in five innings of work for the Dragons. He
allowed four runs on five hits while striking out four.
