Updated: Monday, June 30 2014, 04:26 PM CDT
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa -- Monday’s game v. Clinton was suspended after nine innings with the game tied 3-3. Chad Christensen’s RBI single with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning knotted the score 3-3, sending the game to the 10th inning. The 10th inning did not start as the umpires called everyone off the field with severe weather moving close to the ballpark.

The game will be completed at a later date in Clinton as the two teams do not meet in Cedar Rapids the rest of the season.

Clinton tallied an early run in the first inning to jump in front 1-0. Aaron Barbosa singled to right field with one out, and he later scored on Chantz Mack’s RBI single to center.

The Kernels quickly tied the game 1-1 in the bottom of the first inning. Zack Granite tripled into the left field corner to begin the inning. Engelb Vielma followed by plating Granite with a RBI sacrifice fly to left.

The LumberKings took a 2-1 lead in the third inning with a couple of extra-base hits. Zach Shank lofted a double down the left field line, and he then scored on another run-scoring hit by Mack. This time, Mack sharply lined a RBI triple high off the wall in left.

Kohl Stewart started for the Kernels and went four innings. He allowed two runs on four hits while striking out two and walking two. Alex Muren came out of the bullpen and retired all six batters he faced, striking out one.

Jose Flores got the start and went six innings for Clinton, allowing one run on five hits while striking out three and walking two.

Zach Shank gave Clinton an insurance run in the eighth inning with a solo home run to left to lead off the inning. It was Shank’s sixth long ball of the season.

The Kernels got that run back in the bottom half of the eighth inning, trimming Clinton’s lead to 3-2. J.D. Williams reached on an infield single with two outs, reached second base on a wild pitch, and scored on Alex Swim’s RBI single into shallow center.

Then, the Kernels tied the game 3-3 in the bottom of the ninth inning. Jon Murphy led off the inning with a walk. He moved to second base on a sacrifice bunt by Granite. Christensen’s RBI single to center with two outs plated Murphy and tied the game 3-3.

Hudson Boyd went two innings on the mound for the Kernels, allowing one run on two hits. Todd Van Steensel pitched a scoreless eighth inning in relief.

The Kernels now travel to Wisconsin for a three-game series against the Timber Rattlers, the Midwest League affiliate of the Milwaukee Brewers. The series begins at 7:05 p.m. on Tuesday night. RHP Aaron Slegers (5-5, 5.75) gets the start for the Kernels while Wisconsin counters with RHP Zach Quintana (2-4, 6.02)

The Kernels return home on Friday, July 4 for a 5:05 p.m. game v. the Beloit Snappers, the Midwest League affiliate of the Oakland Athletics. The game on July 4 is Armed Forces Night, and fans can enjoy a post-game fireworks show. The Kernels will wear special patriotic jerseys that will be sold during the game via a silent auction. The first 1,000 fans through the gates receive a free set of Military Heroes Baseball Cards. It’s also another Friday Mug Club, sponsored by 98.1 KHAK. Fans can buy a 16 oz. souvenir mug filled with your favorite regular draft beer or soda for just $6.00 and get refills at the concession stands for just $3.00.
