MBB: 4 Kohawks To Represent USA Basketball in Brazil

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - For the second-straight year, the Coe
College basketball programs will be represented on the USA Basketball Division
III teams on a tour of Brazil.


On the men's team, seniors to be Max Schmarzo (Palo Alto, Calif. /Palo Alto)
and JT Vonderhaar (Bettendorf, Iowa/Assumption) will be among the 10 players.
Coe College Head Coach Bryan Martin will serve as the head coach of the team.
Luther's John Androus is also on the men's team. Last summer, Seth Light
(Carlisle, Iowa/Carlisle) and Andrew Wirth (Cedar Falls, Iowa/Cedar Falls) were
selected to play on the team. Starting all 25 games, Vonderhaar averaged 12.2
points and 5.0 rebounds per game in his junior campaign for the Kohawks.
Schmarzo averaged 8.8 points in 24 games played, including 17 starts.

 

For the women, junior to be Allie Wirth (Cedar Falls, Iowa/Cedar Falls) has
been selected. Wirth is the only player from theIowa Conference on the team. As
a guard, Wirth led the Kohawks with 6.0 rebounds per game, while also having a
team-high 89 assists.

 

"This is an outstanding group of basketball players that come from 13
different states and 14 different colleges and universities from across the
United States," said Ron Smith, Director of USA Sports Tours and Events.
"We feel that we have some of the best of the best representing almost
every region in the country. This group of players have been high achievers
both on the court and in the classroom. They represent everything good that
NCAA Division III institutions have to offer. "

 

The tour begins on July 21st, as both teams travel to Orlando, Fla. for
training. On July 22, the teams depart the United States for Sao Paulo, Brazil.
On July 23, 24 and 25, the teams will play doubleheaders in the state of Sao
Paulo against selected teams from the region. Both teams will travel to Rio de
Janeiro on July 26, as they play another doubleheader on July 28. Both teams
depart Brazil on July 29.

 

While in Brazil the teams will experience educational, cultural and social
aspects of Brazilian life through city, school and sports club visits. While in
Rio the team will be staying on the famous Copacabana Beach and touring the
Christ the Redeemer Statue and Sugar Loaf, two of the most recognizable
landmarks in the world.
