Waterloo Temoporarily Closing One Fire Station

Updated: Wednesday, July 9 2014, 06:18 PM CDT
WATERLOO, IA (CBS2/FOX28)--It may take Waterloo firefighters a bit longer to respond to some emergencies.

Fire station six is now closed temporarily due to budget cuts.

"It's a great sense of security,” said Bill James, who lives less than half a mile away from a fire station.

"I've never had the necessity to call upon it, but it's comforting to know that it's available, in the event that we would need it we would get t quick response,” he said.

That is all changing.

"This station was designated for what we call a browning out. This station was closed today, this the first day it's been closed this fiscal year,” said Waterloo Fire Chief, Pat Treloar.

"Brown Out" means closing on a sporadic basis. A decision fueled by budget cuts for the fiscal year.

"The council gave the fire department a budget where they lost three positions. By losing those three positions, we simply don't have enough personnel to cover six stations,” said Dan Trelka, Director of Safety Services.

The changes could affect response time.

"That's a possibility that we may have an increased response time for people in that section of the city,” Trelka said.

"Some of the areas of station 6's territory won't see an increase in response but a large portion of the territory could see a significant increase in response times,” Treloar said.

Chief Treloar says fire stations two and four will cover station six's territory in the meantime.

As for bill, he says he still feels safe in his neighborhood but, "I just hope that it doesn't close for an extended period of time."

This is not the first time fire station six has been browned out.

It closed for four and a half years in 1993 through 1997.

The Fire Chief says he's hoping to discontinue the process, depending on how they get through July and August.
