UPDATE: New ICCSD Elementary Maps Out

Updated: Wednesday, July 9 2014, 08:46 AM CDT

IOWA CITY, IA (CBS2/FOX28) -- In an on-going attempt to solidify plans for where Iowa City Community School District students will go to school, district administrators presented several drafts of new elementary redistricting maps to the school board on Tuesday.

Following direction from the board, an administrative team drafted several options for the elementary attendance zones, based on what the district will look like once the new south and north elementary schools open, and the drafts incorporate the possibility of magnet schools.

The team proposed to two options for the Southeast Elementary School Cluster that are possible once the south elementary schools opens in 2015. One option moves students around after turning Twain Elementary School into a magnet school, and the second option keeps Twain as a regular elementary school, not a magnet.

The team also proposed two options for the Northwest Elementary School Cluster, keeping in mind the opening of the new north elementary school in 2019. The first option turns Lincoln Elementary School into a magnet school, and cuts lines for the other area elementary schools around Wickham Elementary School.

The second option would pair students from Lincoln with students from Coralville Central Elementary School in Kindergarten through first grade, and Lincoln would host those students. In second through sixth grades, students from Coralville Central would be paired with students from Lincoln, and hosted at Coralville Central. Students from Kirkwood and Wickham would be paired and hosted at Kirkwood in Kindergarten through second grade. Those students would then be paired and hosted at Wickham in third through sixth grade.

Maps are available on the district website in the board packet, here. The school board will discuss the proposals at its meeting at 6 p.m. Tuesday night.
