Storm Clean Up Continues in Fairfax

Updated: Tuesday, July 1 2014, 05:37 PM CDT
FAIRFAX, IA (CBS2/FOX28)--While some prepare for flooding, others are recovering from two days of strong storms.

Powerful winds took one life and left a widespread path of damage in Fairfax.

The governor toured the area and promised help would be available.

"About 1:30 in the morning, I happened to get up and stepped in a couple of inches of water,” said Lonnie Adair.

He says things only got worse from there on Sunday morning.

"We went to get out, looked outside there was probably four foot over by up on the side of my pickup,” he said.

The heavy rain and wind pushed waters passed the barriers of a nearby pond.

It happened so fast that Lonnie and his family couldn't even get out on foot.

"Fire rescue came and got us out by boat,” Lonnie said.

The storm damage is why Governor Terry Branstad toured Fairfax Tuesday afternoon.

He first stopped by the collapsed bridge on highway 151.

Many people there commute to work to the Amana's,” he said.

He also says the application process for assistance will be made available to anyone who has storm damage.

As for Lonnie he says he's not going to dwell on these damages. He says no matter what life continues

"Salvage what I can and we'll make the best of the rest of it,” he said.

The total cost of the damage is still coming in.

Governor Branstad says if it exceeds the state's threshold of 4.2 million, he'll request a federal disaster declaration from President Obama.Storm Clean Up Continues in Fairfax
