Ski Team Back On The Water

Updated: Thursday, July 10 2014, 10:29 PM CDT
CEDAR RAPIDS, IA (CBS2/FOX28)-- The Five Season's Ski Team finally got back on the water Thursday for the first show of their summer 2014 season.

The team had to cancel their last 6 shows due to high levels on the Cedar River.

"We're going for a big show, a big finish," a skier yelled during a pep talk before the show.

All of the 90 skiers were ecstatic to get back on the water.

"It was like really sad," skier Maddye Cavanagh said.

But Thursday night, the team's frowns turned upside down because they were back on the water.

"It's really hard to not ski that long. you just want to go out and ski and have fun," Amber Bortz said.

Bortz has skied for 14 years and said it's her life.

The last time the ski team cancelled their shows was back in 2008.

"We thought the water would go down and it would come back up," Cavanagh said.

The river levels have dropped, but the flyers were battling against the river current.

"It's like flying a kite," Don Clow said.

Clow is a driver for the ski team and said skiers had to modify their routines because of the fast currents.

"It feels great!" Clow said about getting back on the water.

Skiers said they're glad this season won't be a total washout but financially, donations are down.

"Our income comes from concessions and crowd donations," Clow said.

Since they cancelled, 6 shows, they are behind on finances but hope they won't have to be kicked off the water again this summer.

They hope to see more crowds and new ski lovers like Phyllis Smith attend their shows.

"I think it's gonna be a good show and I'm looking forward to it," Smith said.

The ski team's shows are every Thursday at 7 PM at Ellis Park until Labor Day.
