Judge Reverses Ban Over Courtroom Photos

Updated: Thursday, August 21 2014, 06:03 AM CDT

WEST UNION, IA (AP) - A judge has reversed a ban that prohibited an Iowa news photographer from publishing photos taken at a courthouse.

Community Media Group, which owns the Fayette County Union in West Union, said Wednesday that District Judge Richard Stochl lifted the ban placed on Jerry Blue.

Blue was scolded on Aug. 11 by Judge Joel Dalrymple for taking photos of a courtroom hearing without advanced permission. The hearing involved a local mayor facing sexual abuse charges.

The permission is part of revised rules on media coverage of Iowa court cases. Dalrymple issued a noncompliance order and warned any publication of the photos could result in Blue and the West Union newspaper being held in contempt.

Anelia Dimitrova, an editor and spokeswoman for Community Media Group, says she's thrilled with Stochl's decision.
