DBQ Opens Water & Recovery Center

Updated: Thursday, October 3 2013, 09:19 AM CDT
DUBUQUE, Iowa (AP) -- The city of Dubuque is celebrating the completion of its new water and resource recovery center.
Officials will hold a public ribbon-cutting ceremony Thursday afternoon and offer facility tours.
The center, previously known as the Water Pollution Control Plant, underwent a three-year upgrade at a cost of $65 million.
There are multiple sustainable features, including anaerobic digestion for wastewater sludge stabilization. The center can generate about 50 percent of electrical demand on-site by using methane produced from the digestion. Officials hope to make that 100 percent in the future.
The facility treats nearly 10 million gallons of wastewater daily.
