Court Rules Recess Appointments Unconstitutional

Updated: Friday, June 27 2014, 05:24 AM CDT

WASHINGTON, DC (CBS2/FOX28) - Republican lawmakers are praising the Supreme Court's decision to side with congress in a dispute over presidential recess appointments.

The high court ruled unaimously that three of President Obama's appointments to the national labor relations board were invalid.

The justices said the periods were "too short" to be considerd recesses.

Iowa's senior senator says he is happy with the decision.

"President Obama's unconstitutional recess appointments are part of a pattern in which he thinks if he cannot otherwise advance his agenda he can unilaterally thwart the law," said Senator Chuck Grassley.

The constitution allows a president to fill temporary appointments during a recess without congressional approval.

Lawmakers have recently attempted to prevent certain appointments by never technically shutting down the Senate.
