Heroes - Iowa Accordion Club

Updated: Thursday, December 19 2013, 08:31 AM CST
For the Iowa Accordion Club and band leader Darlene Suchomel, December is their busy time.  She will be playing her accordion at care centers and events most days this month.
The players range in age from the 50s to the 80s, and travel for the love of the music.  She says one year, they put 4,000 miles on their van.  While they do accept a fee in some cases, the travel really adds up.  That's where owner/operator Purvish Patel of the Cenex station comes in.  He and his company awarded the Club "Tanks of Thanks,"  $50 in gas to get them to and from appearances.
He says, "When a person does something good to the community, we want to appreciate them."
Tanks AND hearts full, Darlene says this fuels more than just her vehicle.
She says, "It does our hearts good.  It's therapy for us, as well!"
