CBS2 Heroes - Teen Volunteer

Updated: Thursday, December 19 2013, 08:32 AM CST
While many seniors sit back and get ready for their next adventure, Benton Community senior Tyler Steele isn't stopping.
addition to track ( he has a scholarship to Mt. Mercy in the Fall), FFA
(he's President this year), show choir, national honor society and
taking a full course load (3 college-level classes), he's a super
volunteer at St. Luke's Hospital.  Tyler says, "I always knew I wanted
to work in the health field, but this is something I want to do for the
rest of my life."  He's put in 150 volunteer hours, so far, mostly in
the Emergency Room.
"They're (young patients) intimidated coming
into the ER and here they see someone who's their peer, actually taking
care of them and can understand how they feel..."  says Barbara Berns,
St. Luke's Patient Coordinator.
Tyler has cut back to just 3 hours on
Sundays, but plans to volunteer more this summer saying, "I'm thankful
for everything I have.  I feel like this is  way I can give back."CBS2 Heroes - Teen Volunteer
