CBS 2 Heroes: Captured Moments

Updated: Thursday, December 19 2013, 08:24 AM CST
Sarah Nebel's small storefront photography studio is known for making memories
to last a lifetime. Her bright and cheery space is famous for capturing
families at their best, most natural moments. You see them displayed in her
window. Happy families. Happy days.

But Sarah is known for some special
photos that hang in the University of Iowa. They are still pictures of
families, and they are still in their most natural moments. Though the joy is
replaced with sorrow, the laughter with tears.

Sarah is one of five
photographers called to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics when a baby
is in trouble. When a baby, may not make it. She's there to quietly capture a
families last moments together.

She says, "I just go in and start
shooting. I will either take the baby, or if it's hooked up to everything, I
just jump in with the family. It just depends on the situation the child is
in."

Sarah adds, "There have been a couple that have really touched me.
I feel like I went in and really felt the heart of their loss.".

The
moments of love, loss, grief and pain, often pass in a blur. Sarah's talent
allows the families to look back, eventually, in their own time.

The
Cherished Portraits program is always looking for trained photographers to add
Sarah's small group of volunteers. If you're interested, go to:
