Southwest Side Robbery Victim Speaks Out & Recommend More Lighting for Jacolyn Park Neighborhood

Updated: Saturday, August 3 2013, 12:16 PM CDT
CEDAR RAPIDS, IA (KGAN) -- On the street surrounding a southwest side complex there are a few lights here and there.

"It was just as dark you know as it is now," says Dustin Kelley.

However, Kelley doesn't believe there is enough lighting. He was walking home to his apartment at the Shamrock Apartment complex near the Jacolyn Park area when he was robbed at gunpoint. Kelley's attackers made off with a cellphone and a flashlight but ordered him to remain face down on the ground. Kelley tells CBS 2 that he thought he would get shot. Residents at the complex say their complex is in need of more lighting. It's not the responsibility of the police and residents say the property managers are on their side. They tell CBS 2 that it might take push from city leaders to get the job done.

"If the other side of the laundry facility was lit up I think it would extend out more to that area too," says Don Byerly.

For now they will remain vigilant and they aren't giving up on making their neighborhood brighter and safer.
