Iowa City Police Substation Helping Change Southeast Side Image

Updated: Friday, May 10 2013, 10:23 AM CDT
IOWA CITY, IA (KGAN) -- Iowa City Police two years ago took steps to increase its presence in the Broadway area of the city. CBS 2 spoke with a Crime Prevention officer on the force to see how the substation has been received in the area. The substation is surrounded by a number of residential properties and businesses in a strip mall.

"I really think it's been a good addition to have on this side of town," says Marce Billups.

Billups is a store manager at the "Stuff Etcetera" consignment shop just off Highway 6 and it is in a prime location. It's only just steps away from the substation.

"Our being here has a purpose," says Officer Jorey Bailey.

The department has been a part of that community for 2 years and their presence has changed the area that was once plagued but a notoriously bad image. The substation is directly in front for the Broadway Condominiums. The condos were once an apparent focal point for shootings and drug deals.

"The substation gives us the opportunity to be out in parts of the community that we were maybe further separated from," Bailey said.

Through the power of technology and cameras they can keep an eye on the area around them. The station has become a vital part of a community where in two years officers have taken steps to redefine a neighborhood.

"It also can work on perception of crime and give people the perception of safety," says Officer Bailey.

Residents and business leaders say it's working and that sometime perception is more than half the battle.

I definitely think there's some comfort level knowing that he's right down there," says Billups.

The department is moving forward with helping to change the image of the area by signing on to remain in the substation for another 3 years.
