Connects Against Crime: CRPD Awards

Updated: Saturday, August 3 2013, 12:49 PM CDT
CEDAR RAPIDS, IA (CBS 2/FOX 28) -- In a time when Batman and Iron Man dominate the box office, heroes of another kind appeared on the big screen Wednesday night at the Collins Road Theaters.

The film ‘Heroes – Behind the Badge,’ about officers lost in the line of duty, was a part of National Police Week, where we stop to remember the fallen.

“At any given time, when we're out on a call, the danger is always there,” said Officer Graham Campshure.

The week is also about those still able to serve.

Thursday night, the Cedar Rapids Police Department honored their officers that step into the line of fire everyday.

“We can give out three times of the awards we do,” Sgt. Ryan Abodeely said.

Two of the 70 honored tonight included Officer Antoine Smith and Campshure.  Campshure received recognition for his quick thinking.

“Gave CPR to an individual where we were able to get a heartbeat back and he was then transported to a hospital,” Officer Campshure said.

While he was honored for saving a life, the story behind Smith's award almost cost him his own.

“A suicidal subject attempted to end his life on top of the US Cellular parkade,” Officer Smith said.

The man threatened to jump from the ledge. Officer Smith climbed up to stop him. As he pulled him back in…

“He decided he wished for me to go with him as well. A bit of a struggle ensued for me to save my life and his as well”

Situations like that exemplify the mentality of a police officer.

“Make sure everyone that everybody goes home safe at night,” Officer Campshure said.

Even if sometimes that 'everybody'…doesn't include them.Connects Against Crime: CRPD Awards
