CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (CBS 2 / FOX 28) - What's your favorite radio station? You probably have one or two. But a Cedar Rapids woman has more than forty-and they're all hers. Mary Quass owns the only radio network Created in the Corridor.

"We all listened to radio as kids growing up," recalls Quass,"and I never really thought I'd have a career in it." This Corridor entrepreneur is the president and CEO OF Cedar Rapids-based NRG Media. Boasts Quass, "We're in 4 states and we have 42 radio stations over the air and 25 digitally streaming stations." Not bad for a woman who says she stumbled into the business in sales. Finding her passion, Quass bought her first station within a decade, then merged her company with Capstar Broadcasting in the '90s and took the company pubic. "We grew from about 28 stations to almost 500 in 18 months."

Consistently named one of the most influential women in radio by Radio Ink Magazine, Quass eventually partnered with the man who founded Gateway Computers, and that's where NRG began. "We have top 40, we have country, we have classic rock," says NRG's director of programming, Jeff Winfield. The company has a well-rounded portfolio operating from its core mission of Great Local Radio.
"We do exciting promotions, we have personalities that listeners care about and we're heavily involved in what's going on in the communities in which we serve," says Winfield.

Ironically, none of the stations run by this Corridor-based company can be heard in the Corridor. Explains a determined Quass, "If there was an available frequency that covered this market it wouldn't be available long, I'd have it."

And Quass isn't afraid of new media and subscription music services, believing listeners still have a favorite station.
"If you start from that and we're friends and it's your favorite radio station," says Quass, "and we just take you into the digital world so that we're with you wherever you go, I think that, to me, is the biggest challenge but the best opportunity we have going forward."

Mary Quass is a prominent player in the local business community, having served on the boards of United Fire and Casualty, US Bank, Mercy Medical Center and other organizations. You can learn more by visiting the News Links section of this website.
