Created in the Corridor: Kinseth Hospitality Companies

Updated: Monday, December 30 2013, 08:07 AM CST
NORTH LIBERTY, Iowa (CBS 2/FOX 28) - You don't have to come from a family of entrepreneurs to be one yourself. But as the Kinseth family proves, it certainly doesn't hurt.  Chances are you've stayed in one of the family's hotels at one time or another, taking advantage of Kinseth Hospitality Created in the Corridor.

"He works in all facets of the company now," said Bruce Kinseth as he introduced Scott Sanborn to his son Ben, now the third generation in the hospitality industry.  And not far down the hall at KHC's corporate headquaters, Bruce's wife, Lisa, is at work in Human Resources. "Anything in the hotel business, we do it," exclaims Bruce, the company's
Senior Vice President.

Kinseth Hospitality Companies build, renovate, manage and provide services to more than 80 hotels in 13 states. And they include almost every brand you've heard of. Bruce Kinseth rattles off a partial list: "Hampton Inn, Holiday Inn, Holiday Inn Express, Marriott, Springhill Suites, Marriott Residence Inn, Marriott Courtyard, Hilton Garden Inn,
Best Western, Days Inn, Comfort Inn, Country Inn."
And Bruce believes his company has been successful because of what he calls Iowa values."Owners like to hire companies like ours that have a kind of down to earth, hands on style of management."
It's a style he and his siblings learned from their parents who owned the Cliff House Motel and Restaurant in Decorah in the 60s and 70s. Recalls Bruce, "We all grew up working for my mom and dad during junior high, during high school and college when we were home."

Bruce passed on those lessons to his son, now the company's Director of Operations. Ben Kinseth says, "Working with my father and learning from a very young age about our business, it's always kind of been where my expertise has been and what I've gravitated to, and it's been great."

Headquartered in North Liberty, Kinseth Hospitality now has 3,000 employees and is building room for more. "As we sit here today," says Bruce, "we have about three (hotels) that are going to be under construction in the next couple months.  One that has already started, two that are going to start."

They also continue to build on their reputation. Boasts Ben, "Taking care of every guest, every single time is our motto. World class hospitality, every guest every time."

In addition to hotels, Kinseth Hospitality manages more than a half dozen restaurants, a water park and a golf course.
